I have a bit of a love/hate thing going as far as lists are concerned.I enjoy writing lists and I love that they do make me feel more organised and I love that when I use them properly I am actually more organised. I love that a food shopping lists means I won't come home with a trolley full of crisps and chocolate (try shopping at lunchtime when you haven't even had breakfast yet and see what happens).I hate that I usually end up losing them before completing even the first task and that when I clear out a handbag I tend to find them all again scribbled on the back of envelopes, receipts and on the inside of a mars bar wrapper when I happened to have a sharpie handy.So I'm hoping that some pretty ones will make me more likely to use them....
and because they're roughly the same size as a twenty pound note they'll fit in my purse and hopefully I'll be less likely to lose them.Anyway, if you're anything like me and fancy a handful of pretty lists for yourself, feel free to click on the photo above and grab a copy for yourself. I love freecycle. Normally any listings on the local group are snapped up in no time, but one listing for sewing patterns has popped up again and again for the last couple of weeks. So I said I would take them.Never hurts to have a sewing pattern or two knocking about the house.I arranged to collect what the lady described as "a few" patterns and she also had some fabric scraps as well if I wanted to take this. So I did."A few" patterns turned out to be a huge box stuffed with over 30 patterns. Some are lovely with some vintage, some, um, retro and some are just plain and simply as rare as the hen's teeth. Lets just say I'd have to make the shoulder pads for some of these bad boys from scratch, because I don't think I can buy them ready made and to the best of my knowledge even Bombardier don't make wings that big!
The jammies on the left can be made in girl's sizes but I must have a pair too. I'm pretty certain my tiny little shorts days are buried somewhere in the past though:) Would you look at those little blue ones, you'd be able to see what I had for breakfast in those!And my opinion of the humble fabric scrap has obviously been tainted through dabbling in patchwork. As far as I'm concerned a piece of fabric has to be too small to blow your nose on before it qualifies as a scrap.
Clearly dressmakers and patchworkers have two very different opinions on what qualifies as scrap fabric because that bag was full of yardage, yard after yard of lovely fabric. And you won't see me complaining.
That little elephant print is just crying out to be running round the hem of a new market skirt isn't it?
I've no plans whatsoever for the rest yet. It's all bundled up now and getting a once over in the washing machine. A good press with the iron and they'll be ready to go.But if my sheer luck annoys you and if it will make you feel any better, I also have a huge zit right in between my eyebrows that just isn't showing any signs of clearly the eff off. Seriously, I look like a Klingon* and I now get to go off and spend the day up at Scrabo tower and then off to Kilkeel or Newcastle and have picnics and such looking like this!Go on admit it, you feel better don't you?*Please note for your own safety that even Klingons eating dainty little sandwiches with the crusts cut off and sipping juice from a plastic flowery cup should not be approached. They can still be pretty pissy when caught off guard.
In every effort to prepare Toots for primary school, I have been letting her play around with my laptop for the last few weeks.
When we attended the open night at her primary school a few of the teachers explained that the school actively encourage the use of computers and that from day one each child will spend some amount of time using a PC every day. There are a bank of computers in each classroom and it works out roughly one computer for every three to four kids so there aren't any time constraints on the kids using them.
I've been allowing Toots to play around with the laptop, basically opening either a word doc or paint and letting her do her own thing. I want her to get used to the basics, using a mouse, drag and drop, navigating around the screen, that kind of thing.
Anyway, I'm very likely to be the last person to have heard about Big Fish Games, but I'll tell you about them anyway.
The weather was awful last week and I was starting to run out of things for Toots to do. We baked, did some crafts, colouring, painting, music, singing, dancing, you name we did everything, but it was getting a little repetitive so I went hunting online for something to keep her occupied. I didn't really have anything in mind, probably paper dolls or some new colouring pages or word games, but instead I stumbled upon Big Fish.
For anyone who hasn't heard of them, you should check them out. Ok, the games are mostly based n characters like Dora, Diego, Spongebob and Wonder Pets but there are a few lego games and such.
The games are designed with preschool age kids in mind and the way it works is that you can either buy the complete game (usually around 60 levels) for about $8 which is totally worth it for a preschool game. Toots received a V smile for her birthday and the games for that thing are £20 and upwards and no offence but they're crap.
The other thing you can do (and this is what I do) is download one free hour of gameplay. You can choose any game at all and once your child uses the free hour it gives you a handy uninstall button and you can download another free hour. I have six hours of gameplay downloaded and ready for her if the weather turns out to be bad again.
Toots loves the games because there is a lot of variety. Mostly they are number games, word association, colour matching and such. The games are actually very educational and best of all, considering that the games are essentially free, there aren't any advertisements at all.
Toots favourites so far have been Dora's Carnival Adventure 1 & 2, Diego's Dinosaur Rescue and the Wonder Pets Save the Puppy, particularly the last one because as she completes each stage she "wins" a colouring page which she can print out all by herself.
She's only played a little bit of each but so far I can see a vast improvement in her computer skills. She has absolutely no problems using either the mouse or the navigation pad on the laptop. She can click, double click, drag and drop ad type her name in at the beginning of each new game without any help at all.
